A new study by My Cross has analyzed the most common faiths in the world to understand which religions have the strongest visibility and influence on social media platforms.

According to research by the Christian jewellery company MyCross, Islam is the most searched-for religion on the Internet, with over 31 million people seeking information each month. However, Christians are the most active religious group on social media, sharing over 11 million Instagram posts about their faith alone.

When people have questions about faith, 21 million turn to the internet for answers about Christianity each month. The Bible also remains the world's most-researched religious text by far, with 47 million people looking up verses, stories, and teachings online.

Buddhism is among the religions that people are most curious about, with 8 million users looking up information about its teachings online.

“Faith has always been about connection, and today that connection is increasingly digital,” a spokesperson for MyCross said. “From social media and video platforms to informational websites, religious communities are finding new ways to make their traditions accessible and visible to younger generations.”

To calculate the social media influence, the analysis used five key visibility factors: total religion demographics, Google queries regarding religion in one month, Instagram hashtags, Google queries related to Holy Writings, as well as the YouTube Visibility Index (calculated based on the number of YouTube channels and YouTube videos with related hashtags).

The final score takes into account all key factors, highlighting the faiths with the highest visibility on social media and online.

As of 2025, more than 5.6 billion people reportedly use social media, representing nearly 70% of the world’s population.
