Christian teacher freed from jail in time for Christmas

by Alex Collett

A Christian teacher, who was jailed after refusing to refer to a transgender student by their preferred pronoun has been freed from an Irish jail before Christmas after being behind bars for nearly three months.

Enoch Burke, who’s currently suspended with pay at Wilson's Hospital School in County Westmeath, Ireland, was released from Mountjoy Prison after he was jailed in September for refusing to obey a court order that he must not enter the school.

According to court documents, Burke was suspended in August over the incident with a pupil.

Mr Burke cited his Christian beliefs and then after showing up at the school on the first day of term in September, he was arrested.

He has repeatedly said he won't accept the court's judgement of wrongdoing.

Justice Brian O’Moore, serving on Ireland's High Court made the decision to release Burke with the rule that if he went against the court order again, he could be jailed.

According to the court judgement, the next hearing is due to take place in the New Year.
