Christian Railway Mission urge prayer for Bedford crash, which left driver dead

by Anna Rees Green

Members of the Christian charity Railway Mission have attended the site of a two-train collision in Bedford, which left a driver dead and 90 injured.

Two East Midlands services collided just after 5pm on Friday evening, near Bedford South. At least one carriage derailed.

British Transport Police declared it a major incident, with 33 passengers taken to hospital and 11 in a serious condition. Another 56 had minor injuries.

An investigation into the cause of the tragedy is underway.

The Railway Mission offer chaplaincy and support to those working on the UK’s train networks. Railway Mission and British Transport Police chaplain Steve Rowe was at the scene on Friday evening.

"The air was of calm and professionalism," he told Premier Christian News. "We were there to check on their well-being - it's very sad that the driver has lost his life. So please, in your prayers remember his family, friends and colleagues."

"Pray for the recovery units, who have been working long hours," he added. "These things are always hazardous. The amazing dedication of response units was on show, so please thank God for them."

The Archbishop of Canterbury has also offered prayer for those involved in the crash, saying: "May God comfort and protect them, and equip all those who are caring for them in the aftermath of this tragic incident.”
