Christian politician reflects on the awe, emotion and majesty of the Queen's lying in state

by Glyn Jones

Politicians from the Parliament in Wales, the Senedd, are among the thousands of people who travelled to London to pay their respects at Westminster Hall.

Among them was Conservative member of the Senedd Darren Millar, a Christian who chairs the Cross Party group on Faith.

He told Premier he felt "a sense of awe, a sense of majesty" as he entered the hall in parliament for the Queen's lying is state.

"It was a very emotional moment walking into Westminster Hall in such a momentous time in British history.

"Knowing that our Queen did such a tremendous job as Defender of the Faith, the Christian Faith, which she held very dear throughout her life and reign."

The Senedd member reflected on the blend of history, ceremony and transition.

"I couldn't help but feel that sense of awe that sense of majesty when I walked into that room."

The Welsh politician says he will treasure lasting memories of walking quietly through Westminster Hall.

"You can feel the emotion of the place with thousands of people moving through in silence. It's so silent you could hear a feather fall.

"Seeing the military guards all around the coffin and that sense of thankfulness in my heart to God for giving us such a great leader."

Mr Millar recognises the events of recent weeks have been both historic and unsettling for many people with the death of the Queen, the proclamation of a new King and the appointment of Liz Truss as Prime Minister.

But the Senedd member is optimistic. "It is a season of change and seasons of change can be turbulent, but they can also offer an opportunity for the sort of reflections the nation has been having on the divisions of recent years and help to pull people together.

He concludes, "These are times of transition for us as a nation into what I hope will be a much brighter and better and more peaceful future for us all."
