Christian Paralympian "absolutely mortified" at death of girlfriend

Christian athlete Oscar Pistorius has told a court he's "absolutely mortified" at the death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

His lawyers have read a statement in which he insists he fired several shots through his bathroom door thinking an intruder had climbed through the window.

But prosecutors argue the death of Reeva Steenkamp was pre-meditated murder.

The Paralympian sobbed as a magistrate ruled he faces the harshest bail requirements available in South African law.

South African lawyer - Andries Stander - said the athlete is trying to argue a case for bail: "You cannot just say that it is in the interest of justice that he must be released due to this and that.

"He will have to give exceptional circumstances."

On Sunday, Mr Pistorius was visited by a pastor, AJ Wilson, who told Reuters television: "The Holy Spirit gave me an order that this is now the chance to go pray with Oscar.

"The (police) colonel told him that I have come to pray with him. He just cried and we all cried together."

His bail hearing continues tomorrow.

Meanwhile, 700 miles away in Port Elizabeth, Reeva Steenkamp's heartbroken family have attended her funeral.

Her uncle Mike's revealed she'd wanted to campaign to stop violence against women. He said: "That was echoed so much in the months that she had mentioned that she would like to be an activist for that.

"And her fortune has swung right around but I think the Lord knows that statement is more powerful now."
