Christian MP 'prepared to accept' PM's apology for his Covid party fine

by Alex Collett

Conservative MP Sir Desmond Swain says he thinks the Prime Minister's latest apology for breaking Covid lockdown rules is sincere and should be accepted.

The Christian MP told Premier, "I do think the Prime Minister has made a fulsome apology, and I'm certainly prepared to accept it."

Sir Desmond paid particular attention to a question Conservative Steve Baker put to Boris Johnson in the House of Commons, asking if the Prime Minister was both sorry and 'repentent'.

Sir Desmond said his fellow-Conservative backbencher, "wanted to be clear that the Prime Minister was repentant about what had happened." He added, "I thought the Prime Minister gave a very good and fulsome answer on that."

The Hampshire MP believes the breaches of lockdown rules in Downing Street need to be seen in context. "I have my own take on this whole business. I do think...people have a clear misunderstanding of what went on.

He continued "It wasn't as if the minister invited his friends around for a drink. What happened was the Prime Minister had drinks with officials and civil servants that he worked with all the time, at their place of work."

Despite the Conservative MP's view that Boris Johnson's latest apology should be accepted, opposition parties continue to call for the Prime Minister's resignation. A handful of Conservative MPs have also stated they no longer have confidence in their leader.
