Christian ICU nurse speaks about life on the frontline of coronavirus care

by Cara Bentley

As the NHS gears up for a huge number of infectious patients, staff are being re-deployed to different hospitals and anticipating being their busiest in years.

Clare is an Intensive Care Unit nurse in a London hospital and has been telling Premier about the struggles at work currently.

Speaking about how her faith was helping her, she said: "Obviously it's quite a stressful time. My faith is so great at the moment because God is the only one who knows what's going on. God is God I guess you can say. This is happening for a reason - we don't know why and it's hard to understand but I'm trying to get my faith to be stronger and it's nice that we have God through this and he's the only person who knows the outcome of it all."

Clare explained how people can pray for her and other NHS staff: "It can be a bit much at times, I think just for strength and just peace of heart not to be too stressed when going to work. And I guess for myself or my colleagues and everyone just that we will be kept safe, that God will keep us safe throughout this and protect us, which I know he will."

Speaking about what many health care workers have described as 'the calm before the storm', she added: "The morale is actually fine for now and I know it's only just beginning but we all work together really well and everyone's kind of in the same boat. It's new for everyone, even new staff, it's new for them, so it's maybe a bit more challenging but they're all really keen to learn and we're keen to teach them how to do things."

The country will clap for the NHS once again on Thursday evening; Clare said it brought a tear to her eye watching it back last week after her shift: "I think it's actually such a great idea. The NHS has had some stick over the years but this is really nice, we're here to save everyone, well, try to anyway."
