Christian group criticized for 'inappropriate' seafront sports cage

by Premier Journalist

A Christian group has been criticized for constructing a sports cage on a Welsh seafront, with a local resident calling it a "monstrosity" and "inappropriate for children".

The Scripture Union set up the structure in Criccieth to facilitate sports activities during a week-long summer holiday club. However, that didn't stop disgruntled locals from complaining about the cage, with one posting her objections on Facebook and labelling the attraction "disturbing".

"Have you seen what the scripture union have put up in Criccieth?! Massively inappropriate," she wrote.

"Surely they haven’t had permission to erect a cage for children? Can someone please look into this. It’s quite disturbing.”

The resident went on to suggest that the cage could be "against Covid regulations".

"Surely putting kids in a confined space rather than (giving them) the freedom of the entire green is against Covid regulations?" she suggested. "It’s actually made me feel quite sick and I’m not the only one.”

Gwynedd Council said they would "investigate the matter", before later confirming that no formal complaints had been made about the structure.

They said: “We are aware of concerns raised on social media about the holding of children’s activities in Criccieth, but no formal complaint has been made to the council.

“We have been in contact with the Scripture Union, the organization holding the children’s activities, and understand that the cage is being used for children’s ball games.

"We also understand that the activities are drawing to a close today (Friday). Arrangements are being made to inspect the site to ensure that the activities have not caused any damage."

Scripture Union's Jo Morley said that they had "a Holiday Club going in Criccieth all week" and that the structure was "a sports cage that we use for football and games for children and young people".

“We leave it completely locked up and secure when not in use," she added. "But all of the rest of the time the children can go in and out as they wish.”
