A Christian family has been forced to flee their village after a large mob attacked their home and threatened to kill them if they did not abandon their faith.
The assault reportedly took place on September 28 in Mukaram village, Sakuma District, where Sodi Deva and his family are believed to be the only Christians. The family converted from Hinduism four years ago.
According to Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), around 60 to 70 people, reportedly led by the local village head, surrounded the family home, tore down the structure, and vandalized their crops and possessions.
Deva’s wife, Gangi, 32, was dragged out of the house by her sari and harassed in front of the crowd, while their 11-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son watched in fear as the mob threatened to kill them unless Deva renounced his faith.
The family escaped to a neighboring village about 15 kilometers away, where they are currently taking refuge in a local church.
Deva has appealed to the district police for help, but officers have yet to open a formal investigation. Without an official First Information Report (FIR), no arrests can be made.
CSW’s Founder President, Mervyn Thomas, condemned the attack, calling it “an assault on the fundamental rights and dignity of every Indian citizen.”
He urged local authorities to immediately register an FIR, ensure the family’s safety, and hold those responsible accountable.
