Christian doctor condemns IVF egg sharing scheme

Undercover reporters from the Daily Mail went to one clinic, and recorded a consultant talking about how they charge other couples thousands for donated eggs.

In one undercover recording the nurse says 'it's just like giving blood.'

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority says donations are supposed to be voluntary and unpaid.

Dr Trevor Stammers is a Christian medical ethics expert and a former GP. He is also a lecturer at St Mary's University in Twickenham in London.

He spoke earlier on Premier's News Hour and said the HFEA needs to act.

"This story is extremely sad, disturbing but actually not surprising.

"Fertility treatment is extremely costly and women seeking it are very vulnerable so the power of a doctor to persuade a woman to donate eggs for others is extremely powerful."

He also went on to say that the HFEA needs a radical overhaul and more funding:

"They probably need more inspectors, they need to probably be more proactive in arranging inspections and talking to general practioners.  I don't think anyone enquired when I was a GP as to what was going on."

Dr Stammers concluded by saying: "If the only way the need for eggs is being met is through this unethical practice there needs to be a reforming of the system so that women can obtain help they need without clinics exploiting the women financially or otherwise."
