Christian charity urges couples to get debt help

The statistics from Prudential revealed that 13% of people have secret loans, averaging at around £7,800.

The report shows women are slightly more likely to keep their debts private than men.

Christians Against Poverty told Premier the report highlighted how much work needed to be done to help people cope with debt.

The charity's spokesperson Emily Holden said many people are too afraid to talk about money problems.

"Often it's due to the shame that's brought with that," she said.

Holden added: "There are all sorts of reasons why people keep it a secret. We just encourage people to be honest with each other."

Christians Against Poverty runs special budgeting sessions for couples at hundreds of churches across the UK.

Emily said: "There's specific advice tailored for couples.

"The people on the course can help you look at what you've got coming in and going out as a couple, and how that affects your finances."
