Christian charity unsurprised girls 'too self-concious' for sport

by Hannah Tooley

The Romance Academy said it has seen first hand the increase in negative body perceptions in young people. It said children are constantly shown false images as real ones.

The government report also said gender perceptions and a lack of female role models in the sporting world are further reasons for girl's withdrawal from sport. Sport England's This Girl Can campaign was designed to help combat this.

It showed two million fewer women, aged between 14 and 40, played sport regularly than men. It also said 75% of females wanted to become more active.

The government report suggested Year 3 was the last year in school that personal appearance was not an important factor to children.

Jason Royce is the Director of the Romance Academy, a Christian charity that teaches young people about sex, relationships and body image.

He said children are bombarded with unrealistic pictures, telling Premier: "So often so much of the stuff young people see, and hear, and engage with is about the way they look.

"We need to place more emphasis on who they are and who they're becoming for them to see themselves as valuable and beautiful for more than the way they look.

"We've got to remind people that their bodies are an amazing thing, even if they don't look like the sterotypes they see around them, and remind them that there's more to them than just their body."
