Christian charity offer debt tips on 'Blue Monday'

Researchers have worked out that today is the day where the UK is at its most melancholy with concerns about debt, loneliness and seasonal affective disorder having an impact.

Manchester and Leeds topped its list of the places which suffer worst from the January blues.

Charity Christians Against Poverty is using the day as an opportunity to encourage those struggling with their finances to seek help.

Speaking to Premier, Dan Kelly from CAP said: "There's always a solution. The earlier someone realises 'this has gone behind my control, I could do with help', there's no shame in that.

"The quicker they accept that and seek help, the quicker they're going to be able to get out of that situation."

Supermarket Tesco is also hoping to help Brits banish the blues by giving away free fruit today between 3.30 and 5.30pm.

Tesco's corporate responsibility director Josh Hardie said: "We know today is the day people are most likely to be feeling the January blues, and we hope a free piece of fruit will help our customers feel a little bit happier as they shop with us."

In a world of fake news there’s never been a greater need for quality Christian journalism. Premier’s mission is to provide the Church with the most up to date and relevant news, told from a Christian perspective. But we can’t do it without you.

Unlike many websites we haven't put up a paywall — we want to keep our journalism free at the point of need and as open as we can. Premier’s news output takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. No one in the USA is sharing news like we are across radio, magazines and online so please help us to continue that today.

For a monthly gift of $11 or more we’d also be able to send you a free copy of the brand new Premier Bible, a wonderful Anglicised version of the NLT packed with exclusive bonus content, reading plan and resources to help you get the most out of scripture.

Your monthly support will make a world of difference. Thank you.
