Christian charity concerned over mental health of dads

by Hannah Tooley

The National Childbirth Trust says fathers can also suffer post-natal depression and are often worried about their partner.

Chris Muwanguzi, from the Christian charity Family Matters Institute, told Premier: "We as Christians have an essential role to be helping young boys and men in that preparation to better relationships.

"So we should be talking about relationships very early on and what they involve."

The National Childbirth Trust said 38% of new dads are concerned about their mental health, and 73 per cent are worried about their partner's mental state.

The Family Matters Institute is encouraging men to speak up when they feel overwhelmed, Chris Muwanguzi, from the group said there is a host of pressure on men: "There's the money pressures, so the change of lifestyle - I've got to earn more, I've got to do enough... there's sleep deprivation for a lot of guys who are sleeping in a home or the same room where the baby is, they often have to move out into another room, but then they have to go to work.

"Sometimes helping mum out a lot and then there's also just the sacrifice, there's a change of lifestyle, change to many, many things.

"The expectations to these guys, so the change of emotional well-being for them, the fact they are now this father figure or even a father being - being able to provide more than just a breadwinning role, so the emotional attachment, the support to mum and at the same time to go to work."
