Christian charity backs bid to ban gambling adverts

by Marcus Jones

Christian charity CARE has given its backing to a new report which is expected to call for a total ban on TV and online gambling adverts.

According to the Guardian, the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Gambling Related Harm will reveal details on Tuesday for an overhaul of the industry.

Other suggestions which will be put forward include an end to VIP schemes and inducements to bet, a £2 stake limit on online slot machines and independent affordability checks.

The APPG has spent the past year gathering information on the issue.

CARE's Head of Communications, James Mildred, said: "The gambling industry has been allowed to grow beyond all recognition and it's about time steps were taken to properly regulate betting firms.

"Time and again, gambling companies have proven that they cannot be trusted to put the needs of vulnerable people first.

"Self-regulation is very evidently failing and the result is a corresponding growth in gambling-related harms.
