Christian charity against paying for celebrities

Tearfund has said it does not pay celebrities money to take part in campaigns after the admission of Barnardo's that it did.

The children's charity said it paid reality TV star Binky Felstead from Made in Chelsea £3,000 to front a campaign. It said it was the first time it had taken such a decision.

But Tearfund told Premier it was not a route it would choose.

On the News Hour Head of Media Katie Harrison said: "There are lots and lots of people who have become very successful at what they do.

"They're grateful for the opportunities that they've received along the way.

"They understand that they've worked hard and been very privileged to get to where they are and they want to give something back.

"And they choose to do that often through us because we're so passionate about the local Church around the world and because they share our Christian faith."

Barnardo's said paying a celebrity to take part in a campaign was not a decision it "took lightly".

In a statement the charity said: "We have had to postpone some previous retail campaigns as we have been unable to secure the right celebrity backing. This was a way of testing the impact of a popular celebrity in order to appeal to a new, wider audience."

Katie Harrison from Tearfund added: "Some people who are very high profile choose to give their time to Tearfund and help us immensely doing brilliant things.

"We don't actually pay them a fee to do that, we tend to work with celebrities who want to give their time to us."
