Christian broadcaster launches education channel for refugees

A Christian TV network is launching a new channel to help educate the millions of Arab children with no access to schools.

Sat-7 already broadcasts Christian content across five channels in 25 countries in the Middle East and North Africa.

Programmes are broadcast in three languages - Arabic, Farsi and Turkish - and are watched by 15 million viewers.

The network serves as a mission platform to reach those in countries with strict censorship laws and get round the issue of illiteracy.

Sat-7 says the new programmes will be especially useful for refugees who may have not had any formal education.

Chief Exec Terry Ascott told Premier: "There's about 21 million out of 120 million Arab kids under the age of 16 who do not have access to education or are in danger of dropping out."

With the launch of the new channel, Sat-7 is seeking to install Christian values into its viewers.

Ascott said: "We're going to come at it from a Christian world view with Christian aspects of character development [such as] honesty and inclusiveness. [These values] are important to the future of Arab society."

The company has recently celebrated its twentieth anniversary.
