Premier launches Hybrid Church Charter

by Donna Birrell

Premier has launched a new charter asking churches to commit to continuing to serve a digital audience.

During the lockdown, the organisation carried out an opinion poll that showed 25 percent of the population had joined online worship. It is now hoped churches sign up to a Hybrid Church Charter to demonstrate a commitment to accessibility, inclusivity and outreach through digital.

During the Covid pandemic, the forced suspension of in-person services caused a transformation in how individuals connected with church. And as the building doors closed, digital doors swung open.

Pete Philips is head of digital theology for Premier Digital:

"During the pandemic we noticed that so many people were joining church online. About 25 per cent of the population joined online worship and so we thought, let's keep this up- let's have the best of both worlds."

"For many people, especially for those whom are unable to attend on-site church services and activities due to health issues, disability or lack of accessibility measures, the emergence of digital opening allowed them access and equality with those who had always taken this access for granted."

Premier believes the future of the church is hybrid, combining the best of what our buildings and traditions allow with the best of digital opportunities.
