A Christian politician in Scotland says King Charles could still be the monarch in an independent Scotland.

John Mason, who is a SNP MSP for Glasgow, is keen for Scotland to break away from the rest of the United Kingdom but that doesn't mean a break away from the royal family.

In June this year Nicola Sturgeon set the motion that Scots will be given another chance to vote for independence for their county in October 2023.

Speaking to Premier, Mason said: "I think it's a big challenge for Charles, as to how he handles this because he can't just, you know, rely on his mother's legacy.

"Both in Scotland, England and in other countries of the Commonwealth, the Queen has been greatly respected and some people may rethink at this point.

"It seems to have worked for example, in Canada, pretty well to have her as head of state. Justin Trudeau has been quite emotional about his relationship with her. 

"So it is certainly feasible that he continues as king if Scotland were to be independent."

Mr Mason also said he hopes many prayers will be given for the new king.

"He is very much like the Queen. I think in many regards. 

"But he'll do things his own way and I just hope people will give him a bit of time to settle in.

"I know he's been preparing for 73 years and it's quite a challenge to start a job at 73.

"So I hope there will be prayers for him and support and a bit of patience, until he settles into this role."
