Chaplain bemoans 'Black Friday' shopping behaviour

by Desmond Busteed

Ray Borrett's been speaking after at least two people were arrested after fights broke out at several supermarkets holding Black Friday sales.

A woman was also injured when a TV fell on top of her at a Tesco superstore in Greater Manchester.

There've been scuffles nationwide, including at a branch of Asda in north London, where the chain's chief merchandising officer Andrew Moore has apologised, he said: We can't condone that kind of action.

"Clearly it was very busy here; first thing. Some customers were unfortunately involved in incidents, we've got some learning to do; this is only the second year we've done it and we will take that learning on board and ensure that we so all we can to make it as safe as possible for customers in the future."

A number of shops opened at midnight, boasting massive discounts on a range of goods, with £1.5bn expected to be spent via debit and credit cards.

Ray Borrett, lead chaplain at Bluewater Shopping Centre in Kent said he understands the need for sales like this but suggested it's leading to trouble.

Speaking to Premier he said: "We have a situation where people are so desperate to get their hands on the latest gadget or piece of clothing that they'll go to any lengths to get to it.

"If that means pushing someone out the way or scratching or fighting then that's what will happen."
