The Grammy-winning artist, Chance the Rapper is drawing fresh attention to Christianity in mainstream music after revealing a clear move toward gospel.
Chance the Rapper, whose real name is Chancelor Johnathan Bennet, revealed he had recorded his “first gospel song” in an online video that he posted on Christmas day in 2025.
In the caption, he stated: "I wrote and recorded this in just a few days, I might need a whole album cause this is what we grew up on."
This announcement prompted mixed reactions across faith communities and social media, with one TikTok user saying "Imagine how many people you'd bring to Christ locking in on this lane".
While many fans shared excitement at the prospect of a Gospel album, some questioned the legitimacy of this move. One user said: "But is it ACTUALLY GOSPEL, or is it Hollywood gospel?"
The announcement came shortly after discussion around Gloria, from his collaborative album with Jeremih, which had already prompted debate about a deeper move into gospel or Christian hip hop.
The 32-year-old, Chicago artist has long explored Christian themes in his music, frequently referencing God, prayer and gratitude, however this is the first time he has explicitly described recording a gospel song.
In August 2025, he released Letters, a track on his album STAR LINE, which addressed church life, grief and faith with direct references to worship, scripture and the role of the Black Church. The song, featuring Rachel Robinson, highlighted both reverence and critique, underscoring his ongoing spiritual engagement.
In 2018, he proudly declared his faith in God before more than seven million followers when he referred to himself as a "Christian rapper" and said he has "faith in my soul".
No release date for the gospel song has been announced.
