Catholic priest story removed by Google

by Hannah Tooley

The BBC has published a list of news stories that have been affected by a judgement at the European Court of Justice (ECJ), which gave individuals the right to ask Google and other search engines to delete stories about them on the internet.

Under the ECJ ruling stories that are inaccurate, inadequate, irrelevant or contain excessive information about a person can be asked to be taken down, according to The Times.

A story about the Archdiocese of Birmingham awarding £15,000 compensation to a man over allegations that Father John Tolkien abused him as a boy scout 40 years ago, was on the list of those removed.

Father Tolkein, the son of JRR Tolkein, is just one of the many people to have their stories taken off the internet.

Other cases involve a nanny jailed for assaulting a baby and how blank cheques belonging to MP George Galloway were used to steal £2,000.

Google said it had more than 37,000 requests, relating to 126,000 links of which 39,000 links were removed.

A Monthly Gift Of $11 Makes A World Of Difference

In a world of fake news there’s never been a greater need for quality Christian journalism. Premier’s mission is to provide the Church with the most up to date and relevant news, told from a Christian perspective. But we can’t do it without you.

Unlike many websites we haven't put up a paywall — we want to keep our journalism free at the point of need and as open as we can. Premier’s news output takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. No one in the USA is sharing news like we are across radio, magazines and online so please help us to continue that today.

For a monthly gift of $11 or more we’d also be able to send you a free copy of the brand new Premier Bible, a wonderful Anglicised version of the NLT packed with exclusive bonus content, reading plan and resources to help you get the most out of scripture.

Your monthly support will make a world of difference. Thank you.
