Cannabis farm worth £350K found in a former Gateshead church

by Alex Collett

A Cannabis farm with an estimated worth of £350,000 has been found in a former Gateshead church and community centre.

Northumbria Police reported that they found 350 plants, when they raided the disused Robert Young Memorial Church in Crawcrook, Gateshead on Thursday 23rd June 2022.

Officers are investigating and have appealed for information.

Neighbourhood Inspector Alan Davison said: "We know the public have differing views on cannabis, but a farm of this size will turn significant profit to then be reinvested into further illicit activity such as trafficking, by organised criminals, who have little concern for the ripple effects on our communities.

"No-one wants this type of activity on their doorstep as it presents a host of other issues, surprisingly cannabis farmers do not make good neighbours. Anyone living near an operation like this can expect to see a rise in anti-social-behaviour, theft and even violence."

A spokesman for the force said a fake floor had been installed and power bypassed.

Northumbria Police went onto say: "Many cannabis farms, such as this one, also bypass their electricity, creating a dangerous fire hazard.

"No-one wants to live near that which is why we are committed to tackling this type of criminality.

"If you suspect someone to be involved in drugs supply in your area, please report it to us and we will act on your information.

"If you see anything suspicious in your community, always report it to police via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page or by calling 101. In an emergency, or if a crime is taking place, always ring 999."
