Call for more help for Christians to adopt

by Antony Bushfield

Home For Good is asking politicians to prioritise reform of foster care, invest more money and offer more support to people of faith who want to take on a child.

The charity said it had taken the steps because children left in the care system can face 'devastating on-going effects'.

Currently 68,110 children are in care in the UK, costing the state £2.5 billion a year.

The salary of foster carers should be increased to the Living Wage, the document suggests.

Future ministers are also urged to 'work constructively with faith communities' by making it easier for Christians to adopt.

"Faith can be seen as a barrier to both adoption and fostering," the manifesto says.

It calls for "robust faith literacy" to stop "misunderstandings and incorrect perceptions" by social workers.

Home For Good also wants better support for foster carers who adopt and more training for all involved with vulnerable children.

The document says: "Home for Good calls on the next Government to continue developing existing services and also make five new commitments to improve the lives of children in care.

"Home for Good thanks and celebrates all who have played a part in changing the lives of children who have passed through the care system.

"We ask that anyone with the power to influence fostering and adoption through government does so with the passion and commitment each child deserves."
