US Evangelicals show support for Donald Trump so far in 2020 elections, popular author says

by Kelly Valencia

British popular author Martyn Whittock has said US Evangelicals have shown support for Donald Trump in today’s elections.

Speaking to Premier, Whittock said although there has been a drop in support, white evangelicals have continued to endorse President Donald Trump.

“Preliminary exit polls show that, what you might call the US evangelical new normal, has been maintained. In 2016, 81% of white evangelicals voted for Trump.

“Exit polls conducted by Edison research for the national election poll indicate [that] 76% of US evangelicals [have] voted for Trump. So that's a slight drop from 2016, if correct, but still extraordinarily high, and a real phenomenon.”

Whittock believes that although some British evangelicals might find hard to reconcile Christian faith with some of President Trump’s policies and behaviour, he said that is important to remember that in the USA, there is a very close relationship between the evangelical community and the Republican Party.

“We will look at issues about gender…but some of the gun control issues or antipathy to a national health system, for example, leave us scratching our heads. I think that's what's so difficult about America. It's so similar, and yet it's so different.

“The US evangelical community has clearly decided [that] certain things outweigh everything else. And that is quite challenging for all of us” Whittock added.

The US presidential race between Joe Biden and Donald Trump remains on a knife-edge with no clear winner yet announced at the time of writing.
