Boris Johnson and his fiancée Carrie Symonds had their four-month-old son Wilfred baptised in a ceremony on 12th September, Westminster Cathedral has confirmed.

The small christening ceremony was reported to be held in the cathedral's Lady Chapel, with the Prime Minister and Ms Symonds holding the child as he was baptised by Father Daniel Humphreys. 

A spokesman for Westminster Cathedral told The Telegraph: "I can confirm that he was baptised at Westminster Cathedral on September 12. It was a private event."

The new details also provide a solid alibi for the Prime Minister, who was accused of travelling to Italy that weekend for a short holiday. A source from Perugia Airport claimed that Johnson had landed on Friday 11th September at around 2pm. They retracted the statement after Downing Street said the allegations were "completely untrue". It later became apparent that the airport had mixed up Johnson with former Prime Minister, Tony Blair. 

A spokesman for Mr Johnson said that journalists could "confirm with the priest" that the PM was not in fact in Italy but instead at the Cathedral baptising his son. 

While there is not a huge amount known about the Prime Minister's religious beliefs, it has been widely reported that Carrie Symonds is a practising Catholic.
