Children are going to learn about St Andrew and other British patron saints as part of a new book series trying to help ensure British values are not forgotten.

Primary school pupils will learn about the patron saint of Scotland, who was the older brother of Peter, as well as multi-culturalism and other world religions when they reach Key Stage 2.

The publisher behind the five titles said many schools "have been struggling" to meet government guidance issued nearly two years ago requiring them to promote British values such as democracy and tolerance for those of different faiths.

Gersham Books said: "The British Values series ...responds directly to the Department for Education guidance on promoting fundamental British values as part of Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural education in schools."

One of Jesus' twelve disciples, Galilean fisherman Andrew was crucified by the Romans in the western Greek city of Patras.

As well as including the British patron saints, one of the books, Our Country Our World, explores the Islamic month of Ramadan, the Hindu festival of Diwali and the Jewish Passover.

Gresham Books added: "Our Country, Our World provides an introduction to the wide-range of cultural traditions in multi-cultural Britain and encourages students to acquire an appreciation of, and respect for, their own and other cultures."

Other titles in the range, which was developed with the help of school teachers, include It's The Law!, Looking After Britain and Let's Vote On It!
