Bishop warns of potential 'death clinics' in Guernsey

Rt Rev Philip Egan labelled the proposals "grim" while claiming that helping someone to die is never "compassionate".

A bid to change the law there is set to be voted upon by politicians in May which could see Guernsey the first place in the UK to allow assisted dying.

The change would see those who are terminally ill, mentally competent and have less than six months to live being given the option to end their life with the help of a doctor.

In his message, Bishop Philip said: "I appeal to all people of good will in Guernsey to overturn this grim proposal coming before the State legislature, and at the same time to redouble the compassionate care of those who are frail and terminally ill.

"Let there be no death-clinics in Guernsey."

The UK parliament last voted on the issue in 2015. It was unanimously rejected.
