New Bishop of Truro announced

by Lydia Davies

The King has formally approved the nomination of Rt Rev David Williams, currently the Suffragan Bishop of Basingstoke, for election as the new Bishop of Truro.

He succeeds Rt Rev Philip Mounstephen, who was recently appointed to the See of Winchester.

The announcement, made by the Prime Minister's Office on behalf of the King, marks a significant step in the leadership of the Diocese of Truro, following the departure of Bishop Mounstephen.

David Williams, 56, was educated at Bristol University and trained for ministry at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford.

His clerical journey began with his ordination as a priest in 1990, after serving at All Saints Ecclesall in the Diocese of Sheffield. His pastoral experience grew as he became Vicar of Christ Church, Dore, in 1992, later taking on the role of Area Dean of Ecclesall Deanery in 1997.

In 2002, Williams moved to the Diocese of Winchester, where he served as Vicar of Christ Church before being appointed Bishop of Basingstoke in 2014, a position he holds until his new appointment.

As Bishop of Basingstoke, Williams has built a reputation for leadership, deep pastoral care, and a commitment to community engagement.

His appointment to the Diocese of Truro is expected to further strengthen the church’s mission and outreach in the southwest of England.

The Diocese of Truro has expressed its excitement at the news, with many looking forward to Bishop Williams’ leadership in the years ahead.
