Bishop Michael Curry offers prayer for the people of Afghanistan

by Cara Bentley

The Bishop who preached at Prince Harry and Meghan's wedding has offered a prayer for those who are vulnerable in Afghanistan.

Since the US withdrew its troops, The Taliban has taken over most of the country, causing thousands of people to try to flee on planes and boats.

Older generations of Afghans remember the Taliban's hard-line Islamic views, which included stoning, amputations and public executions before the US-led invasion that followed 9/11.

The Taliban have tried to suggest that they are now more moderate, such as urging women to join the government, but many Afghans remain sceptical and remember the days where girls were not allowed to go to school, and women could not work.

US President Joe Biden has defended his decision to withdraw troops.

American preacher Most Rev Michael Curry, the primate of The Episcopal Church who preached at Harry and Meghan's wedding, has written a prayer asking God to "rally the resolve of the nations of the earth to find pathways to save human lives".

He wrote: "Eternal God, hear our prayer for the peoples of Afghanistan. There is a profound humanitarian crisis. Countless people, mostly women and children, are now fleeing and vulnerable. The lives of many are now endangered. The hopes of many are forgone.

"Send your Spirit, Lord, to rally the resolve of the nations of the earth to find pathways to save human lives, protect human rights, and to resolve the hardships of those seeking refuge, asylum, and safety. Hear our prayer for the peoples of Afghanistan. This we pray as followers of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Amen."

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is announcing a resettlement scheme for Afghan refugees. Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said the situation at the airport in Kabul is "stabilising" and "we have made real progress" in getting people out of the country.
