Bicester churches open doors to support community after fatal fire

by Kelly Valencia

Churches across Bicester have opened their doors to offer space, comfort, and prayer after a tragic fire at Bicester Motion claimed three lives, including two firefighters.

The fire broke out on the evening of Thursday, with smoke visible for miles. Two firefighters and a member of the public were killed in the blaze. Two more firefighters are in hospital with serious injuries. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

In response, St Edburg’s Church in Bicester has opened for anyone in the community needing a quiet place to reflect. A book of condolence has also been made available.

“Our hearts are broken at this devastating news and we hold the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in our prayers,” Rev Pete Wright of St Edburg’s Church said. “We share in the grief of our Bicester community and offer St Edburg’s as a place for people to come and find comfort.”

St Laurence’s Church in Caversfield is also open for private prayer and reflection. In a message shared on social media, it said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the events of yesterday, and especially with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives.”

Both churches will remain open over the weekend to support the grieving community.
