Ben Affleck has said the concept of grace and redemption is what drew him to Christianity. 

In an interview with Beliefnet promoting his new film, The Way Back, the Hollywood actor said he goes to the same church he used attend with his ex-wife Jennifer Garner and their children. 

"I go to the Methodist Church, [my] kids [are] baptised and I got introduced to Christianity a little bit later in life," he said. 

Admitting that he struggles with his "faith" and "belief", Affleck said what drew him to Christianity is the unconditional love and grace from God. 

He told the news site: "I do see there's something enormously beautiful and elegant about the notion that we are all sinners, and that it's our job to find our redemption, to find God's love, to redeem ourselves, to live the best life that we can, to love one another, to not judge one another, and to forgive one another."

The theme of redemption takes centre stage in Affleck's upcoming movie.

The Oscar-winning actor plays the character of Jack Cunningham who's a widowed former basketball player who became separated from his family due to addiction. 

The character tries to redeem himself from his past failures by coaching a basketball team at the Catholic school he once attended. 

Affleck, who once battled alcohol addiction, hopes the film will help people overcome deep-rooted issues. 

"We all have pain," he said. "We all have challenges of various types and degrees. 

"The question is really, how do we handle that? Do we suffer, fall apart, let it derail us? Or do we pick ourselves up and keep going? That choice is what ultimately defines us."

The film is released in UK cinemas on 24th April.
