A trainee Baptist minister arrested for shouting at a proclamation ceremony for King Charles III has been awarded £2,500 in compensation.

Symon Hill, 47, was handcuffed after shouting, “Who elected him?” during the ceremony at Carfax Tower in Oxford in 2022, shortly after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

Thames Valley Police admitted that his detention was "unlawful".

Hill had initially been charged with using “threatening or abusive words or disorderly behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm, or distress". However, the Crown Prosecution Service later dropped all charges.

Hill, who describes himself as an anti-monarchist, told Sky News that everyone in the UK has the right to peaceful protest and “free expression" regardless of personal views. He stated that his opposition to the monarchy was based on his Christian belief that all human beings are equal in value.

Hill reported receiving abusive messages and death threats following the incident. He challenged his arrest and settled with Thames Valley Police last month.
