Dave Bull, a former atheist, has been appointed as the new Bishop of Buckingham.
The consecration ceremony took place at Canterbury Cathedral on Thursday, led by the Archbishop of York, Most Rev Stephen Cottrell.
Speaking to the BBC, Bishop Dave shared that he was an atheist until his mid-20s when he realised there was something missing in his life and began exploring spirituality.
"I believe that everyone at some point in their life explores spiritual questions and faith," he said.
He called his new role an “exciting prospect,” though he admitted it’s a big step and feels a bit daunting. Despite this, Bishop Bull believes his experience as a vicar in a small town will help him connect with local communities in Buckingham.
He said: "It feels like an enormous privilege to be invited to lead the whole county.
"It feels a bit daunting, I will be honest with you, it is quite a big step to take."
He added: "One thing I think I bring is that I have, until today, been a vicar in a small town, in touch, if you'd like, with local communities."
His appointment follows the unexpected passing of the Right Rev Dr Alan Wilson last year, who had served as Bishop for over 20 years.
Bishop Dave has a strong academic and ministry background, having studied at Oxford University and trained at Wycliffe Hall. He was ordained as a priest in 2009 and later became the area dean of Wycombe in 2016.
