Archbishop of York to join Saddleworth Whit Walk

by Tola Mbakwe

The event takes place on Friday, which is Whit Friday. Whit Friday is known as the Friday after Pentecost and has a cultural significance in North West England.

Villagers from Saddleworth will walk from their local village to Uppermill, each accompanied by a marching band.

After presiding at a short service in Dobcross square, Sentamu will lead a procession to Uppermill where he will make the address at the open-air ecumenical service.

The Archbishop will also lead the procession from a local church together with villagers and two brass bands back to Dobcross.

The Archbishop of York said: "I am looking forward to joining the traditional walk of witness which promises to be an uplifting and fulfilling day.

"This is a fantastic event and I do pray that all who take the time to follow that Cross of Witness will be reminded of the truth that in Jesus Christ is life and life in all its fullness."

The Bishop of Manchester, David Walker will also join the Archbishop in the walk.
