Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu to visit prisoners on Christmas Day

by Aaron James

Dr John Sentamu will spend time with staff and inmates at Kirklevington Grange Prison in Yarm, North Yorkshire, and lead the morning services there.

Mr Sentamu will then meet carers and older people Ayresome Court Nursing Home, before leading prayers outside Yarm Town Hall for the whole community.

The gestures are part of the Archbishop's six-month pilgrimage around North Yorkshire, where he has made particular efforts to minister outside of traditional church settings.

Speaking about his plans, he said: "On Christmas Day, I will be telling all at Kirklevington of the love of God in Jesus Christ for each one of us.

"For those who are in prison, who are lonely, who feel lost or abandoned- they are all stand-ins for Jesus Christ.

"You can encounter Christ everywhere, even in prison! The birth of Jesus of Nazareth reminds us that God is in the business of making all things new.

"All of us can make a fresh start with God and with one another today!"

The archbishop used to be a prison chaplain while he was the Bishop of Stepney in East London.
