Archbishop of Canterbury to meet Sandi Toksvig for coffee next week

by Sophie Drew

TV presenter Sandi Toksvig has confirmed that she will meet with the Archbishop of Canterbury next week.

The meeting comes after Toksvig expressed frustration over a speech made by Most Rev Justin Welby at the Lambeth Conference last year.

Archbishop Justin rustled feathers by affirming the 1998 resolution that gay sex is a sin.

Following the comments, Toksvig took to Twitter saying: “Seriously, with the state the world is in, that is what you wanted to focus on?”

“You didn’t have other more pressing matters like, I don’t know, war or poverty?”

“This is a serious matter,” she continued.

“The lives of LGBTQ+ people are at stake here.

“I have had several credible death threats over the years sometimes requiring the very kind assistance of the police hate crime squad.

“Each and every one of those threats has come from an evangelical Christian.

“Call me, Justin,” she concluded. “Let’s have coffee. Let me talk you round. You never know, I might even forgive you.”

The Archbishop responded by agreeing to a coffee but little else was heard of the potential meeting over the following months.

However, yesterday Toksvig confirmed that the meeting would be happening in the near future.

The confirmation comes after bishops in the Church of England published draft proposals for prayers of blessing for same-sex couples, instead of legalising same-sex marriage.

Returning to Twitter, the QI presenter said: “Quick update – I will be meeting with the Archbishop of Canterbury for a long promised coffee next week.”
