A tin of Heinz "Ready to Serve" kidney soup, which dates to before decimalisation in 1971, has been donated to Cardiff Foodbank.
Helen Bull, partnership and fundraising officer, said: "Probably what's happened is that it is harvest time and lots of people clean out their cupboards and donate items that they have never used and don't really look at them.
The soup can still bears its original price sticker of 10d. A 35 year old tin of Green Giants sweetcorn - costing 35p - was also donated.
Helen Bull added: "Unfortunately what sometimes happens is that when an older person dies the family will clean out the cupboards and they want to donate and don't necessarily realise that it was out of date."
Cardiff Foodbank - which is run by Christian charity, the Trussell Trust - tweeted Heinz, the maker of the soup. The firm replied: "Wow! That soup was discontinued over 35 years ago. Should be in a museum rather than a food bank!"
The news comes after Colchester Foodbank announced earlier this week it had been given bags of pasta and mashed potato it could not use because they dated back as far as 1977.
