Anonymous donor pays off £3m church mortgage

by Aaron James

According to Fox 29, First African Baptist Church in Sharon Hill, Pennsylvania, received a call from its bank in January confirming its mortgage was clear. Church leaders revealed to the station on Sunday that an anonymous person covered it.

Pastor Richard Dent also said their mortgage was burnt symbolically in front of the congregation (the remains, below) to celebrate their freedom from the debt.

First African Baptist Church now plans to reinvest the money it's saving on its now non-existent mortgage payments by helping others, for example by buying more vans to help church members get to services and doctors' appointments.

Pastor Richard Dent said: "This is a blessing. It's unexpected, but we just can't stop giving. We just gave the Lord the credit. This could not have been done without Him.

"In the black community, the church is the only thing we ever had to call our own. It is here where our children learn how to speak, how to stand before audiences."
