Anglican bishops to discuss sexuality

One of the more controversial topics is how the Church responds to the issue of sexuality.

Earlier this year, bishops released guidelines for clergy on how to offer pastoral support to those in same-sex relationships.

This guidance attracted a great deal of criticism as it stated that clergy could not take part in gay marriages and that no official liturgy would be produced for those who wish to bless same-sex unions.

Speaking ahead of this week's meeting, Rev Colin Coward, director of Anglican gay network Changing Attitude, called on the bishops to take another look at the guidance.

He said: 'There is a noticeable increase in despair and depression among LGBTI clergy.

'Partnered clergy are unwilling to marry and those in civil partnership are reluctant to convert their CP to marriage fearing hostile action from their bishop.

'LGBTI clergy conclude that they will never be able to move to a new post if they marry and that there is effectively no future for them in the Church of England.'

'Potential ordinands are dissuaded from pursuing a vocation.'

The meeting in Market Harborough, on the Northamptonshire-Leicestershire border, is expected to last for three days, starting on 15th September.

The College of Bishops, which includes every bishop in the Church of England, is also set to discuss mission, unity and how to disagree well.
