Ancient golden statue stolen from church

The ancient wood carving, which dates back to 1766, has been displayed at St Dyfnog Church in Llanrhaeadr, Denbighshire for more than 100 years.

The 2ft figure was situated next to the altar and was stolen between 22nd August and 5th September.

Rev Val Rowlands, Vicar of St Dyfnog, said the church is saddened that the statue is missing, especially because of what it represents.

She said: "In Christian art, the image of a pelican feeding her young from her own blood, symbolises the sacrifice Christ made by dying on the cross.

"We hope the carving will be returned soon so the local community, as well as the many visitors and pilgrims to the church, can once again appreciate its importance, beauty and significance to St Dyfnog's."
