Robert H. Schuller was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in 2013. He was on life support but was breathing on his own.
Before his death Donna Schuller said: "He was talking normally a couple of months ago, but since the procedure, he was whispering. And later, he could barely mouth words."
She added he had been asleep most of the time but he did not seem to be in pain. Her husband, the Revd's son was given a document detailing exactly how his father wants his memorial service held.
"He gave it to my husband 10 years ago. Perfectionist that he is, I'm sure he has planned out and specified every little detail."
He was Southern California televangelist and author who shared messages on faith and redemption to millions from his famous Crystal Cathedral.
The Daily News, a New York paper said towards the end, his church felt a sharp decline in viewership and donations.
The paper reported that he was ordained by the Reformed Church in America in 1950. He was pastor of Ivanhoe Reformed Church in Chicago until 1955 before moving to California where he began his work on Crystal Cathedral Ministries.
