AI generates face of Jesus from the Shroud of Turin

by Lydia Davies

Artificial intelligence has been used to create a fresh depiction of Jesus Christ, based on the Shroud of Turin.

The image was generated using Midjourney, an AI tool that interpreted the faint facial imprint on the linen cloth, which many believe wrapped the body of Jesus after the crucifixion.

The result shows a long-haired, bearded man with visible wounds on his face and body, possibly referencing Christ’s suffering, as reported by Unilad.

The Shroud has been housed in Turin’s Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista since the 16th century, with debate ongoing over its authenticity.

Some believe it bears a supernatural imprint of Jesus’ crucified body.

While the AI image resembles traditional Western portrayals of Christ, not everyone is convinced.

Dr Meredith Warren, a senior lecturer in religious studies at the University of Sheffield, raised concerns over historical accuracy.

“Jesus would have had brown skin, brown eyes, like the local population,” she told MailOnline. “He wasn’t rich and would have spent a lot of time outdoors… His hands and feet were probably calloused and rough.”
