72-hour Christian summer festival to go ahead in the UK

by Chantalle Edmunds

'David's Tent' is one of the few Christian worship festivals to be held in-person in the UK this year.

The West Sussex based festival, which started out as a grass-roots movement, is now in its 9th year. It started when a group of Christians from across many different denominations began to ask the question, What would it look like to worship God non-stop like King David did?

The festival was named in honour of the tent of worship King David set up when he brought the ark of God's presence back to Jerusalem (2 Chron 16).

"David's tabernacle hosted over 30 years of day and night worship that was open for the people to come and worship in God's presence without the separation of the veil. There were no ritual barriers entry and the people could come and participate in worship. We believe this was a prophetic picture of the kind of worship Jesus made a way for on the cross - a people re-united with God pouring out their hearts in response to His love, His kindness and His majesty," the festival's site reads.

"Our heart for David's Tent is not that we would recreate biblical rituals but that we would create a space where everyone is free and welcome to worship in God's presence," it adds.

Tiffany Buhler is the Managing Director of David's Tent, she told Premier about why the festival is going ahead this year: "It was obviously not an easy decision, because there's quite a lot of risk even still, as we approach August, it's still uncertain how things are going to look. I think for us, the biggest thing is that we are a worship festival, we love to gather the body of Christ, the whole body of Christ from all different streams and denominations together to worship. And I think for us, we have just felt such a Yes, in our spirit, you know, when praying about it, because there's been such a lack of connection over these last 18 months.

"And, you know, we want to do it honourably, we want to do it safely. But we also really feel like it's very important that the body of Christ is intentional about coming back together to re-foster and rekindle that connection with one another and with the Father. So we felt like when there was an open door that looked safe, that it was going to be a very high priority to get the body of Christ together in that space, again, to pursue the presence of God."

John Kyle is part of David's Tent's leadership team, he told Premier what people can expect from the festival and said some of the logistics are still being worked out: "And so actually how we go about running the event, in that sense, we want to be really sensitive as well. So I think how that will look, we're not 100% sure, as yet, we're still sort of working through each of these things. But I think the goal for us will be to have a space where people can reconnect, but come also at their own pace, and in their own way. So in a sense the goal won't be to jam everyone unnecessarily, but a lot of people to process together and process God as well."

The website says that the festival will proceed in line with any government restrictions. "In the event that social distancing, or mask wearing is required, we will adhere to those guidelines," it states.

The event will be held on the Wiston Estate in West Sussex on 27th-30th August.
