1950s bus returns to Shetlands after Bishop's blessing

by Eno Adeogun

The 67 year old Bedford OB Coach was bought for £27,000 and restored in Suffolk by Nick Taylor in 2011 who has taken it to various shows across the county.

However, a visit from its former Shetland-based driver James Watt, convinced the owner to return it the island.

Taylor told the BBC: "It was his life - he'd drive it every day across the island. He took children to school and relatives to weddings and funerals. He even did impromptu deliveries across the island."

He has donated the Bedford - which has a top speed of 40mph - to the Shetland Commercial Vehicle Preservation Trust.

After Bishop Graham's blessing, a support team of 10 - including Watt the Bishop and a Dean departed from outside Norwich Cathedral.

It will go on show at the society's Shetland Commercial Vehicle Show on 24th and 25th June after it arrives in the isles.

The coach was sold to W Thompson of Sandwick in 1950 before Johnson of Scalloway received it four years later.

In 1979 it was sold to Kestral Coaches of Stourport on Severn, before Taylor bought it returning the coach back to its former glory.

The Shetland Coach Trip website states: "Having provided a lifeline to people on Shetland it is only right it be returned to where it is most fondly remembered."
