It was stolen from display in Exeter Cathedral's library in the 1970s, before ending up in an Oxfam branch in Dorking.
The holy book was originally given to the Cathedral by a former chancellor, Canon Edward Charles Harington, in the 1890s when he died.
A book seller found it whilst browsing in the charity shop and after seeing its value reported it to Oxfam.
They then contacted Exeter Cathedral who confirmed the book was theirs.
Ann Barwood, the Canon Librarian at Exeter Cathedral, told the Dorking and Leatherhead Advertiser: "It's one of the most exciting things going on at the library and it was two or three days of really interesting phone calls.
"It was just one of those things, completely out of the blue.
"It's a wonderful turn of events and I don't think we can thank the person who identified the book, and the Dorking staff, enough for their integrity in informing us and allowing this book to come back as part of the collection."
Exeter Cathedral has made a donation to Oxfam to thank them for their part in recovering the book.
