Youthwork launches #LoveCalais campaign to help refugees

by Hannah Tooley

The #LoveCalais campaign aims to provide 1,000 people living in the camps with adequate shelter over the coming colder months.

Jamie Cutteridge, editor of Premier Youthwork said: "The scope for fund-raising is limitless but the time frame is tight and we need to mobilise Britain's youth into action as soon as humanly possible.

"The living conditions at Calais are temporary, ramshackle, and insufficient to survive the oncoming winter.

"This project represents a major opportunity to support people who are desperately in need of our help and assistance."

The two month long campaign launches on Wesnesday and aims to help the women, men and children that are living in 'The Jungle' and other areas around the port.

Young people are being encouraged to sponsor at least one temporary shelter in the Calais camp by organising and participating in fund-raising activities.

Premier's CEO, Peter Kerridge, said: "We are confident that we will secure the support for which we are asking from churches across the UK but I should like to think both the French and British governments, along with UNHCR and other charities, will step up their response levels which have been so miserably poor in recent months."

Each of the proposed shelters will protect up to 12 people and the initial target is to build 80, providing warmth and protection for 960 people before the cold weather arrives - representing more than a third of the Calais camp.
