'You can't put a baby in a shoe box and send it to England': Bishop criticises Ukraine refugee scheme

by Glyn Jones

The Bishop of Buckingham has criticised delays in issuing visas for Ukrainian refugees who have been offered new homes in the UK.

The Rt Revd Alan Wilson has experienced the problems first-hand and describes the process as 'immensely bureaucratic'.

"My wife and I are welcoming, we hope very soon, four refugees from the Ukraine into our home."

The family group consists of a mother and grandmother, a three year old and a baby.

"They've issued a visa for the baby," according to the bishop. "But we can't seem to get visas for the adults."

He tells Premier he finds the situation 'extraordinary', "The fact is you can't put the baby in a shoe box and send it to England - because the baby comes with a mother."

Earlier this month the Home Secretary apologised for delays to people arriving in the UK under the Ukrainian visa scheme. She told the BBC "I apologise with frustration myself…it takes time to start up a new route."
