Whoopi Goldberg to return to Sister Act on stage

by Cara Bentley

Sister Act The Musical will be coming to London's West End in July 2020 for a short run of 39 performances with Goldberg in the main role and Jennifer Saunders as Mother Superior.

The plot follows the story of Deloris van Cartier, a singer who has to go into witness protection and live in a convent but helps the choir of nuns as they help her.

Goldberg was nominated for Best Actress in the Golden Globes for the 1992 film and she also produced the musical when it came to London in 2009, in which Sheila Hancock played Mother Superior.

In a trailer for the stage production, Goldberg said: "I'm coming back to London, Yes! I'm starring as Deloris van Cartier in Sister Act The Musical. Yeah, the original Deloris is back, a little older, a little seasoned but still kind of out there."

Absolutely Fabulous actor Jennifer Saunders said: "I would buy ticket. I can't buy a ticket because I'm in it."

The musical will be on at the Eventim Apollo theatre after a UK tour, which will feature Brenda Edwards in the role of Deloris, who will also play the part on Thursdays.

Tickets starts from £43.75 and go up to £285.
