"We need to air the issue" of the household division of labour, says Christian charity

by Hannah Tooley

Mothers Union was speaking after a poll by Toby's Carvery said mums are on their feet for around 14 hours each day.

Beverly Julian, Chief Executive of Mother's Union, told Premier: "I think we need to air the issue and encourage good, healthy discussions in each family.

"For example, encouraging the children to help out a little bit with the household chores, clearing up the table after a meal."

The survey claims that of the 1,000 parents asked, just 17% of dads said they were happy to take on some housework.

Mealtimes came out as the busiest periods, with 77% of mothers preparing, cooking, serving and cleaning up after dinner.

More than 30% said they help children with their homework and 40% said they read to their children before having time alone at around 8:07pm.

Beverly Julian said that in the run up to Christmas, mums can be placed under increasing pressure. She said: "Every family can ask 'well, what is Christmas all about?' It is about the birth of Jesus and about a special time for families, and a special time can only come about if everyone is enjoying it and everyone is contributing."
